Table of Contents:
1. Overview
Our goal at CollegeTimes is to maintain a high quality college blog that delivers unique social, cultural, and/or intellectual insight with every published post. This means that pretty much anything ORIGINAL, well-written, and thought-provoking goes — with the exception of posts that fall within our “prohibited themes” section (please see below). In addition, we focus primarily on long-term stories and commentaries, and not so much on everyday short-term news or fleeting incidents. (Will your article be relevant a few weeks from now?)
2. How to Post
Login to the user dashboard here: http://collegetimes.us/wp-admin/
1. Click “Posts >> Add New” … or simply “New Post” at the very top of the user dashboard
2. Enter your new article’s title at the very top of the post editor
3. Compose your article inside the post-editing window (a.k.a. WYSIWYG window)
4. Choose all categories that are appropriate for your post (please read the category explanations below!)
5. Choose any tags that might apply to your post (no limit – the more, the merrier!)
6. Choose “submit for review” after you are finished and make sure today’s date is set correctly.
7. You’re done! Check back to see your published article and start earning cash from ads immediately!
3. Themes & Rules
Audiences: college/alumni community, academic community, intellectual community, Internet community
Minimum word count per post: 300 (humor/art/creative posts are the only exception! Please see below)
Intended blog tones: academic, editorial, offbeat, opinionated, scientific, artistic, insightful, critical, comical, reflective, informative, journalistic, philosophical, intellectual, alternative, fringe, underground, challenging, questioning, offensive, defensive, analytical, critical, pondering, revolutionary, provocative, thoughtful, revealing, accusative, hilarious, conclusive, definitive, enlightened, clever, creative, controversial, etc.
Intended blog themes: college news (original or unique!), college press releases (interesting only!), academics, research, criticism, politics, college or international scandals or events (original or unique perpective/information!), political editorials (opinionated, regarding any sort of long-term politics), other editorials (opinionated, regarding any sort of long-term issue), artistic (any sort of commentary about art, architecture, design, etc), cultures/subcultures/alternative cultures, science (any sort of science report or commentary, perhaps in regard to your college or place of research), philosophy, movie reviews, music album reviews, video game reviews, sports news (we are very picky about this one… insightful/long-term commentaries only please!), technology (please avoid consumer-review type stuff), college essays, creative writing, or poetry (new!). Feel free to submit articles with original political cartoons, illustrations, or other insightful artwork (all of which should usually be submitted to the “Art” category) – however, no general photography or art/image pieces, please (this is not Flickr!).
Prohibited blog themes: general/un-insightful/fleeting news (i.e. US, World – stories that are not original, long-term, or opinionated… this is not CNN!), college/etc announcements (i.e. previews, promotions, etc), spam, advertising, hot and sexy babe type posts, stupid videos and photo humor posts, general commercial/consumer information (i.e. cell phone or software reviews), fleeting sports news (i.e. the World Series or last night’s football game), general media information, incohesive babblings, personal activities (i.e. family vacations, boyfriend issues, daily schedules, etc), overly-simplistic issues or commentaries, pieces that drone on and on and on, and any other generally non-intellectual or non-stimulating material. (If its not your original work or insight, think twice before submitting!)
Plagiarism: Plagiarized material from third party sources or websites or re-posting of unoriginal material and/or bunches of links (without parallel commentary) to outside material is not permitted at anytime and will not be allowed by our editors. However, if you have published your writings in another outlet, whether in print or online, we of course permit you to post them again on CollegeTimes as well, as long as your own the copyright! =)
4. Explanation of Categories
News/Politics/Society: Offbeat stories, underground stories, conspiracy stories, news of the strange, humorous stories, rare or unique perspectives on an event… (please try to avoid fleeting news stories! Will your article still be relevant or interesting in a few weeks? If not, then don’t submit it! Has your story already been widely broadcast throughout mainstream media? Then don’t submit it, unless you have something very special to add!) [Perfect Example]
Advice: Advice for readers (esp. for students/alumni), life lessons, tips, enlightenment, rare or unique perspectives on an issue (if your piece is pretty opinionated, don’t add it to this category) [Perfect Example]
Opinion: Editorial pieces regarding almost any issue, esp. political or social pieces… (articles that are offensive, controversial, stirring, argumentative, etc. are very welcomed and belong in this section) [Perfect Example]
College: General category which you should select if your piece regards anything college-related, but feel free to choose other categories as well if applicable!
Entertainment: Movie reviews, game reviews, music reviews, band reviews, pieces on entertainment industry or media, and other such pieces that might appeal to a large audience [Perfect Example]
Subculture: Pieces on subcultures, alternative cultures, urban cultures, underground cultures, and such… pieces that might show up in alternative media or magazines should go in this category usually (i.e. please don’t add Opinion pieces tho this category just because your article might have some “cultural” relevance) [Perfect Example]
Science/Health: Opinionated or objective pieces regarding any health-related or scientific issue or event [Perfect Example]
Art: Opinionated or objective pieces regarding any artistic issue, subject, or event… you may also include actual pieces of art in this section if they are related to a greater story or purpose, however, this section is not a showcase for photographers or artists in general – at the end of the day, CollegeTimes is a writing community! =) [Perfect Example is still pending...]
Relationships: Pieces that regard dating, sex, friendship, marriage, and the torture of each of the above
Humor: Clever, hilarious, or ridiculous writings and stories, parodies, funny tips and advice, etc. [Perfect Example]
Creative: Fictional or creative pieces of writing or original graphic illustrations that are stimulating, emotional, stirring, or entertaining… we have finally decided to allow pieces of poetry in this section as well, due to popular demand. =) [Perfect Example]
5. VIP Writers
The key difference between normal contributors and VIP Writers is that VIP Writers get to attach their Google Adsense ID to all of their articles and earn cash immediately! We have setup a process where new writers may register on CollegeTimes, and after having 2-3 of their articles approved and published, they will automatically have their account upgraded to VIP Writer. However, if at any time a VIP Writer seems to disregard or forget about the above guidelines, we will temporarily downgrade your account until we sense that you understand the guidelines clearly. This helps us to maintain a high quality collection of writings with clear community goals. If you have any questions about this process, please email us at admin/@/collegetimes.us. Thank you!
6. Google Adsense Revenue Sharing
If you have been approved as a VIP Blogger, you will notice a tab on your user dashboard called “My Adsense” where you may enter your Google Adsense Publisher ID and Ad Slot ID (for a 468×60 banner) in order to start earning money off the ads being clicked which appear on all the articles you have written. Authors are currently allotted 100% of all Adsense profits (this is huge!) for top-page banners. If you don’t already have an Adsense account, you will need to apply for one using a website that you built other than CollegeTimes. You will then need to setup a 468×60 Adsense zone that follows the guidelines described on your user dashboard. The more successful our website becomes, the more money you will earn! Read this for more information on our Adsense program.
